Go to your local shelter, pick a shepherd or shepherd mix. They are smart and can easily be trained for protection. Training does not mean making the dog mean, just protective. You can go on line for training tips or take the dog to a trainer. I suggest a female because they tend to be better at this task.
Depends, if you live in a small suburban area that doesn't allow large breeds, then the Dachshund is a very good breed, although not very tough. If you live where there is no breed limitations then the Dalmatian is a good one, but only for ONE person. Otherwise the other best breeds are the St. Bernard, New Newfoundland, (because of it's terrifying size) Rottweilers aren't the best breed because of the many health and hip problems they can get. I preferably think the German Shepard, Alaskan Malamute, Husky, Sharpei, Shiba Inu, or Boxer are pretty good guard dogs. Just make sure you train it right, meaning no physical punishment AT ALL. If physical abuse is present the dog has a VERY HIGH chance to turn on the owners, and possibly kill them in an act of dominance. Learn to correctly train your dog to guard or don't even think of trying.
Why do dogs have to guard anyways? Why do innocent dogs have to die to save humans? Considering dogs should have MANY more rights than humans do. Guard yourself...
Dogs are used for protection in many ways. First of all, there is the intimidation factor. If you are out walking your dog, a robber is less likely to mug you for fear of the dog attacking him to protect his owners. There are other dogs who are trained to attack people on command, such as police dogs. Guard dogs also provide protection from robbery in your home by warding of potential robbers by their bark, growl and body language.
I think a German Shepperd, because they can be a really protective dog.
Addendum:
This is a topic that is often debated, but what it boils down to is what type of work do you want the dog to do.
If you want an alarm dog, that is one that will make a tremendous amount of noise if his territory is breached by a stranger look into the following breeds:
If you want a dog that will be largely independent, and can be released to patrol an area (once it is trained to):
If you need a dog that can be independent and is typically extremely intelligent, who is fiercely loyal to his master, and is likely to finish the job should extreme response be called for:
Even though some dogs are more protective than others, there really isn't a dog breed that is the most protective. Rather, it's what kind of protection that you want. Different dogs excel a different things, but I wouldn't recommend that small dogs guard you. They're too small to scare a criminal away. Also, make sure that the dog isn't too friendly. If a dog is too frendly, it might think that the criminal was a friend and wouldn't be an effective guard.
I'm assuming that you're talking about a guard. If that's not right, and you are living with elderly and you want them to not leave the house, then you should probably get a cat instead to entertain them so that they don't want to leave the house.

It really all depends on the dogs breed and how much it loves your family. But either way the person it loves the most it will protect by instinct.
The breed of dog suggested for a loving family (you, your parents, and sister) depends on if you want a house dog or outside dog. If you want an outside dog, a German Shepherd would be a good breed. For an indoor dog, the English Bulldog is a good breed.
Yes, the Italian Greyhound is a good dog breed to own if you are allergic to dogs.
No breed of dog is good for people who are allergic to dog dander.
