The best fly is the fly that is hatching at the time you are fishing.
My personal favorite is salmon fly hatch from the end of June to the middle of July depending on what part of the river your on here in Idaho.
Year round, dragonfly nymphs work great and so do water bugs if you consider those flies.

In warm summer months the best time is just before and after sunset. Early morning would be second best. In cold months, wait until things are relatively warm in late morning through mid afternoon.
You catch rainbows with flies which imitate the same types of insects they are feeding on at any moment. However this varies widely by location and time and you may have to use trial and error to find the correct fly. In stocked ponds you can catch farm raised trout with a niblet of corn, but the wild ones are a bit more clever.
August...
Summer time because the fish are more active and they are done spawning which means they are ready to eat..

Well, i went fishing in a recently stocked lake and only used spinners. I caught an unbeleivable amount of trout. About ten of them where rainbow trout. They taste good. :) spinners are good yes but i dont like spinners that much because those trouble hooks tear that fishes face up i would use crappie jigs and powerworms it does take some time but i can catch 5 that are at least 5lbs

When we visit Maine when is the best time to get lobsters.
If you are not used to fishing, it is very possible that you will be tired. It may be best to fish for short periods of time.
Early in the morning is the best time.
