Depending on water clarity and presentation, jig skirts for pan fish can be as varied as the imagination. I've used deer hair and dog fur with good results and iridescent FlashaBou Mylar for most warm water jig fishing. Real hair flairs and has a finesse flutter; Mylar has flash but can also be of a fine grade strand that has a finesse action when held in place with no rod action.
Both are easy to tie and easy to replace (especially if you own a dog. LOL)
(I've never been fond of feathers for jig skirt though they are a favorite of many.)
Yes. Crappie jigs catch many other species besides just crappie.
Many fishermen will hook a live minnow on their jig for a technique which is called spider rigging.Live Minnows, Jig Fishing, and Slow Trolling is the best way to catch crappie.
Light green with a black head. Yellow is good too.
It depends on lake size, depth, plants, lake bed structure, etc. The easiest rig you should use in my opinion starts with a ultra light rod and a good spinning reel. You'll get more response and can feel smaller bites with this rod. Crappie are notorious for light bites. 4 to 6 pound fluorocarbon line works the best. The most basic crappie rig I've found that works great is a 1/16 oz. lead jig head with a soft plastic wrapped around it. Small tube jigs work well with chartreuse and pink color working best. Jig straight down with 1 foot light jigging or float a jig under a slip bobber. Added bait works when you attach half a worm, cricket, meal worm to the jig.
The best jig for drilling angled holes accurately and efficiently is a pocket hole jig. It allows you to easily drill holes at precise angles, making it ideal for woodworking projects that require angled joints.
