Why was the Australian Koala foundation started?
The Australian koala Foundation was originally started for the purpose of conserving and managing wild koalas. During the mid 1980s, a veterinary science graduate by the name of Steve Brown studied the increasing incidence of ovarian cysts in female koalas, and the associated chlamydial disease. Realising the disease posed a major threat to wild koalas, Brown sought to establish a group that could fund research and help the koala. A chance meeting with Barry Scott, the Founding President of the Somerville House School Foundation, enabled Brown to put forward his idea, which was enthusiastically embraced by Scott, who was forward-thinking enough to realise the need to preserve this iconic animal. They rallied enough support from friends and colleagues to be able to establish the foundation. Its job is to raise awareness of their plight, and to educate people about little things the everyday person can do to help prevent the eventual extinction of these animals.
