The best you can generally do over the counter are analgesics and non steroidal anti inflammatory, However as there is no cure for Arthritis there is really not much that can be done about them in the long run. Find out if you have an inflammatory arthritis like RA as these can get very debilitating rapidly if not treated properly.

That depends on what is responsible for the pain. You are either looking for a anti inflammatory if the pain is the result of inflammation. or if there is no inflammation in the joint then you may just need a simple painkiller. Arthritis is dealt with in different ways depending on the nature of the disease, everything from just pain killers to anti inflammatory steroidal anti inflammatory disease modifying drugs and so on.

Could someone give me some ideas about the constant pain i feel in my left hip It is not excruciating just a dull pain sometimes it spreads to my knee I am only 25 not overweight or unwell?

You may be having an arthritic problem. Arthritis is not limited to older people and you may be having a problem with the hip joint for one reason or another. The only way to find out is to see your doctor and get it x rayed etc. If You are in Australia you would be best of seeing your GP who will probably send you out for x rays. from there he may have to refer you to a specialist like a rheumatologist to sort the problem out further. what ever you do however get it checked out it will save you a lot of unnecessary pain.

When is hip replacement necessary?

The old view was always to leave the operation as long as possible but thinking has now changed. A painful, arthritic hip will continue to deteriorate whilst waiting for surgery with the possibility that the operation will become more difficult. In addition the other hip is likely to be affected as it will be doing most of the work. Quality of life is now the best indicator. How much is your hip condition affecting your ability to work and play. Can you still take a stroll in the park, eat out in a restaurant or sit through a movie? Can you still pick up your children when they need a hug? How far are your daily activities hindered because of your hip? The current thinking is that the best time to have a hip replacement is when the loss of quality of life outweighs the pain you are experiencing.
