how do you find out if wheel bearing is bad on a 2001 grand am gt
Whether this part can be repaired or not depends on the damage to the intermediate shaft. If the bearing is bad, then a new bearing can be purchased and pressed in / on. If the shaft however is bent or has other physical damage, then no, repair is not possible.
The front wheel bearing assembly is not repairable. A new wheel bearing assembly is replaced as a complete unit. Your local auto parts store can supply you with a new bearing assembly.

First, you need to remove he hub (what wheel and brake are attached to) from the suspension. This can be done with ordinary tools fairly easily. Just follow the directions in the repair manual. When the hub is removed, the bearing will need to be pressed out and a new bearing pressed in. Take the hub and new bearing you got from your parts supplier to a machine shop or auto repair shop and have them press the old bearing out and the new one in. Then put everything back together on the car and that's it. I was charged $30 for the pressing, and $50 for the bearing.
