First, it seems to be attractive to the hens, resulting in the cocks being able to attract girlfriends. Second, since the hens are usually the ones to stay on the nest, sitting on eggs to get them to hatch, and the hens do NOT have brightly colored feathers, predators do not see them as easily, and do not eat them.
