Usually the higher the resolution, the better. You can find different HD televisions and compare them with each other in stores like Best Buy's and Fry's.

Yes. The resolution of HD ready is smaller than Full HD. HD ready is not capable of 1080p resolution and Full HD is.

What is the top resolution output from a Blu-ray player and disc?

The highest HD resolution is 1080p (or 1080 pixels) and in order to get the best HD from the Blu-Ray disc, the TV's resolution should be 1080p as well. A lower native resolution television will reduce the effective resolution.

It really depends on what cords you have and whether your TV supports HD resolution. If you have an HDTV, then get an HDMI cable for your Xbox, then it should be in HD.

If you only intend to watch terrestial and freeview but not sky or virgin which type tv would it be best to buy HD ready or full HD?

The difference between HD ready and full HD is fairly subtle. To display standard definition signals, there will be little difference between any model of HD television but the difference is described here... Normal HD resolution uses 1080 lines to build the complete picture. Most HD signals are broadcast in that format (the alternative is 720 line but it rarely used). A full HD television should have a native screen resolution of 1080 lines and will be advertised as 1080i or 1080p native resolution. By contrast, other HD ready televisions may not use 1080 lines for the display and the incoming signal will be processed and resized to fit the lower resolution. Typical line counts are 768 or 900. The end result is still good quality but the effective resolution is reduced to the number of lines on the display. Freeview (The British digital terrestrial television service) is currently broadcasting in standard definition only. Therefore, with a line count of 576, the native display resolution will be higher on any HD ready or full HD television. The resolution of the image is NOT increased by displaying it on a higher resolution screen. However, Freeview is planning to begin HD broadcasting during 2010. Current Freeview receivers will not be compatible and will need to eb replaced with HD compliant receivers. Likewise, British televisions do not currently have HD Freeview receivers built in. No doubt they will incorporate HD Freeview during 2010. If the television is to be used for HD Freeview in the future it may be worth looking at 1080 line displays as they are potentially the best image quality. Before buying any television, it is worth looking at them first. Regardless of the specification, some look better than others. As we tend to spend many hours looking at our purchase, it is only sensible to make sure it is the picture that we like best.

Does Xbox only work on hd tv?

You cannot. An HDTV will allow for the HD resolution to be displayed. Without the display it is not in HD.

Does it matter how many pixels tv has to play Blu-ray?

No, it doesn't. If the television has an HDMI input, it will handle HD signals and display them at the television's native resolution. For the best quality, the television will be a 1080 line resolution. If the television is a standard definition model, then it will need to use analog connections from the player which don't support HD. Any disc will be displayed at standard definition only in this case.

Do DVDs play in hd on hd tv?

Well a Blu-Ray machine has special technology that can make the DVD image into an HD-compatible image. But the image is not the full resolution.

Which passive 3D TVs are full HD 1080p?

Passive 3D televisions are normally 1080 line. However, the image is split into left and right images so the effective resolution becomes half the full HD resolution, namely 540 line. So although they can claim to be full HD, they have a total of 1080 lines, the viewer sees only half the full resolution.
