Gene Autry's recording of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeeris second to Bing Crosby's White Christmas in sales of all Christmas songs. Roy Rogers had turned down the opportunity to record it and Gene did not want to, but his wife convinced him. It was recorded in one take in the final 10 minutes of a recording session and released as the 'B' side of If it Doesn't Snow on Christmas, which he was sure would be a hit. The 45 sold two million copies in 1949.
Tragically, as the song is wholly ( not holy) secular= the White Christmas of Bing Crosby fame. The no.2 runner-up is, pathetically, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer by a variety of artists including cowpuncher Gene Autry. ( also secular) I don"t think any Religious songs made the (Top Five) of Christmas songs, sadly.
I think that the best selling Christmas songs are ''Last Christmas'' by Wham and ''All I Want For Christmas Is You'' by Mariah Carey.
