That all depends on what kind of tricks you are going to try to do. You will want to thinner board for doing street tricks (grinds, rails, flip tricks...), most of the street skaters I know use between a 7.75" board, to a 8" board. I'm a vert, and pool skater, for that I suggest a much wider board, between 8.5", and 9" to start, and from there you can really feel out how the size of the board effects your style, and which size best fits both your size, and style.
