Whatever you like. The whole "birthstone" thing is mainly a marketing gimmick (probably intended to pass off lame "gems" like the remarkably ugly grayish-pink alexandrite on an unsuspecting public).

That said, the usual ones listed for October are opal, aquamarine, and/or pink tourmaline. Opals aren't bad, I guess. Tourmaline is interesting because it comes in multiple colors, but the pink variety isn't especially pretty. Aquamarine is a variety of beryl and also comes in several colors, but tends to look a lot like the kind of pale greenish glass used in coke bottles, for pretty much the same reason: iron impurities (emeralds are also a variety of beryl but with chromium or vanadium instead of iron, which makes aquamarine sort of the booby prize of beryls). Still, at least you weren't born in June.
