Answer
The most popular 40k army without a doubt is the Space Marines. Apart from the fact that Games Workshop flog them to death, there is a certain allure to playing a race of 7-foot-tall super humans, that tempts everyone at least once or twice.
Although im into 40k, i would greatly recommend the starter set. For £40 you get two MASSIVE armies, dice, and a rulebook! In the most updated set you get dwarves and orcs but you may want to wait a month or two as they are going to update the starter set to go alongside their shiny new rulebook, (since they only got the new rulebook this month and the starter set was made 5 years ago, its a tad outdated so i would wait!)
i think the new set will include skaven (awsome rat-men!) and high elves (fancy and powerfull people)
Answer the best starter kit is most probably a Battleforce for whichever race you collect or just simply 'Battle for Macragge' or 'Assault on Black Reach' See the link.
Space Marines.
They are the most versatile army in Warhammer 40k.
Depends on what kind of race you want to play. Some races have more focus on close combat, some on ranged weapons and some on tanks, but the most versatile army is the space marines.
It is where you use left over bitz to make a custom model.
Warhammer 40,000: Dark Vengeance would be a great start, as it has figurines for two armies (Chaos and Dark Angels) and a mini rulebook.
