A terry cloth towel is recommended. This is the same type of cloth that is recommended for cleaning glass and camera lenses because it's the least likely cloth to scratch surfaces. The only caution is to make sure that there aren't any hard particles on the surface such as a bread crumbs or dirt, which might act as an abrasive (even under Terry Cloth) and cause scratches.

Another option would be the record washer system like Spin Clean which works by using a patented record cleaning solution. The formula traps the dirt that comes off the record and sinks it to the bottom of the washer so it does not get back on the records.
