The best way to get toned is to set a decent excersie routine. I guard at a beach during the summer so part of our job is excersizing, we got about an hour and a half to work out 5 days a week. Naturally most people don't have that amount of time to work out, I luckily got paid to work out which makes it easier to get in shape.
Things to do
Eat Healthy - I know it's common sense, but it's important and not that hard to do. If you follow the excersize guide below you can eat ust about anything aside from sugary or deep friend foods. Eggs, chicken, turkey, tuna are all great for protein which help build muscle, choose what bread over white bread because wheat bread contains complex cards wheras white breat has sugar and are more fattening. Same with cerial, forgoe the sugary cerials and eat things like Life and Cheerios. Tomato sauce is good, fruits and vegetables are also a must.
Run - Running is great, it slims down your body therefore allowing your muscles to show. If you have fat, the fat will cover up your muscles keeping them from showing this keeping you from looking toned. Run two to four miles 3 - 5 times a week.
Push Ups - try to get around 200 in three days a week. It sounds like alot but start off using a deck of cards, flip the cards over one after another and do the corresponding number of push ups, keep doing them until your arms seriously can't do anymore and try to slowly work your way up the deck.
Sit ups - Try to do about 200 three days a week after the push ups. Do them in sets, not all at once.
Swim if possible, do about 1000 (40 laps) meters twice a week of freestyle.
Honestly if you do this for maybe two to three months you'll be very toned, it just takes persistance and self discipline.

Try running and stairs. Try a mile the first day then do stairs for about 15 minutes the next day. You will be really sore so take it easy at first :)
Cut fat, lower your body fat percentage. This will make you more ripped, or toned if you're a woman.
