While all cut flowers will die and fade eventually, there are some tricks of the trade for keeping them colorful longer. First, once you have the flowers home and ready to go in the vase, add sufficient water to the vase so that cut ends of the stems will be covered by 2 or three inches of water, at least. Add the flower food that was provided with the flowers. If you cut the flowers themself, you can purchase some flower food from your local home improvement store. Next, cut a small amount of stem off the end of each flower. While doing this, keep the stems under running water. The goal is to minimize the contact of each end with air, which can cause the cut end of the stem to glaze over which will cause the flowers to fade more quickly. As soon as you have made the new cuts, place the flowers in your vase. They should last longer and look better than ever before!
