To tell you the truth, I would suggest not doing it online, or on a computer for a matter of fact. I taught myself Japanese, so I know what I'm talking about :D Anyway, I would buy a textbook (just look for a well known college's foreign language classes syllabus) along with the workbooks and the cds. The main thing that you need to do is listen and speak the language. What I did was watch TV shows and the news from Japan online so I could get an ear for it, and then to practice speaking I said everything outloud when I was studying. And the most important thing is to not lose faith; just keep on goin' little by little. The benefits are limitless; I just did a homestay in Japan this summer and it was amazing not using English at all. If you are thinking of learning Japanese, I used the Genki series when I was a beginner. For intermediate level work I used another textbook by the same company (The Japan Times). I love knowing another language, and I hope it works out for you!
