Natural is always considered the best and healthiest method, and tends to last the longest. However twist & rip is a good option too. Back-combing is popular but can do harm to the hair. If you're african, twists work well. Wax is a definite no no and should be avoided at all costs as it builds up, attracts all kinds of dirt and residue and over time can destroy dreads. Crotcheting and dread perms should be avoided as well as they are very damaging to the hair.
