How to take care of a Teddy Bear Hamster

Enviroment: You'll need a cage to put your teddy bear hamster in, and bedding. You should change his bedding every week.

Food & Water: Every 2-6 days refill its food. It depends on how much your hamster eats and weighs. Every 2 or 3 days you should probally refill its water to keep it fresh.

Excercise: Usually cages comes with wheels in the cages. If not, I recommend you buy one. You can also buy balls that the hamster can run in. If your hamster is in the ball don't put the hamster on the table or top of stairs/step unless you have a close eye on it.

Other animals in the house: If theres other animals living in your house, such as dogs and cats, you should have them and the hamster(s) keep their distance. You can put them on a higher level, like a table or a desk, so other animals don't have reach of them.

Cleaning the cage: You can start by taking the hamster out, (maybe puting them in the ball or a box), and empty the bedding into a garbage can. You can clean the cage in the sink, or with the hose outside. Scrub the cage to get all of the remainings the hamsters may leave. Refill the food and water if needed. Dry the hamster cage and put in fresh new bedding. Make sure its not too much, or too less.

Treats: Teddy bear hamsters like treats. Put a treat in their cage and when its all gone, you can put another one in. If you notice that the hamster eats the whole treat in one day, I recommend you not give it another one that day. Also pieces of wood are good for hamsters to chew on. Hamsters teeth can get so long, that it can cut its lip. Chewing on wood prevents that.

Cleaning and Trimming: If your hamster smells bad then the cage may need to be cleaned more often or needs to be freshened up with more bedding, never put a hamster in water as it washes important oils off of their fur and will make them sick, wipes are sold at petsmart or petco that are safe to use on your hamster and will not wipe their oils off you can also buy chinchilla bath sand that is perfect for hamster to groom themselves in. if you own a dwarf hamster then their nails may need to be trimmed with small cat clippers or small animal clippers, be safe not to cut the blood filled quick in the nail, this will be a pinkish coloring inside the nail if the nail is white. nail trimming usually needs to be done every week-three weeks depending on your hamsters activity

Playing with them: They do like attention and to be played with. If you touch or wake the hamster up on suprise they may jump or bite you. Teddy bear hamsters sometimes tend to bite, but not often. They like to play in their balls too.

I used to have a pet Teddy Bear hamster. She was the center of my life. I remember her just like it was yesterday. Hamsters do not have a long life span, and a lot of things happen to them, so do not get too attached just like I did.

Well, keep them in a wire cage, and have somethig to cover the bottom to make a floor. Stay away form cotton as a floor. NEVER use cottton or wool, for this can choke and kill a hamster when they stuff their cheeks with it. Also, stay away from cedar flake flooring, try pine, or pellets.

Try to keep the noise level quiet, and for the first two days of getting your hamster, don't touch it, orit may become aggresive, and it will, and can get a disease called Wet Tail, caused by touch, stress, and too much movement.

DO NOT house a hamster with another hamster, they fight, and will kill each other.

The Teddy Bear hamsters are the best choice for hamsters. They rarely bite, unless you startle them, or wake them up, they are very friendly, and love human contact (after the first two days of course)

Don't house them in extreme temperatures such as very cold, or very hot. This can kill them, and also don't house them in a place where the temperature changes alot, or can be too drafty.

Feel free to ask me more questions if you have any, I will be more than happy to answer them for you, and to make sure that the hamster is the right pet for you :)

You can't bathe a hamster. They clean themselves. Although if your hamster can't clean him/herself, you can gentally use a slightly damp paper towel and rub him/her gently.

Is a teddy bear hamster a dwarf?

definitley syrian. they live longer and are waaay less wild then dwarf hamsters. the dwarfs we used to have batted bit and were wild. the syrians and teddy bear hamsters we had were calm and easy to take care of. First time owner: don't hold your hamster for the first couple of days or they may get wet tail :)

What is the averange life span of a hamster?

The average life span for a Syrian (Teddy Bear) hamster is approx. 1-2 years of age. But, with my experience, I have had hamsters live to be 4 and 5 years old. This may be very different for dwarf hamsters though.

What kind of hamsters are the easiest to take care of?

None of them are hard to keep, but they are all kind of dumb and boring. If you want a really interesting pet rodent get a rat - seriously. The are sold in most pet stores in a wide variety of colors. They are very friendly and smart. You can even teach them to do tricks! No hamster will ever learn a trick like roll over or fetch. They make MUCH nicer pets than hamsters.

What is the best hamster for your first hamster?

I dont know if which is the best kind of hamster but it is not the syrian hamsters. They are the worst. I have a Teddy Bear hamster and he has not bit me since I got him. (I have had him for 2 months)

Is a hamster easy to take care of and easy to clean up after?

Depending on if you are an adult or not, Syrian hamsters are usually docile and great for families with kids or first-timers. However, all hamster are all the same when it comes to management. Panda hamsters, such as the one I own, are like cats and will clean themselves. (Syrian hamsters include/are like panda, golden, and teddy bear hamsters.) But, all hamsters urinate, excrete, and can be a little rowdy, depending on the breed. Do a little research and find what hamster would fit your needs/wants. But, overall, Syrian/panda hamsters are great pets who, for the most part, don't smell to much if the cage is cleaned with warm water and unscented dish soap> (It works for my hammy!) Just be sure you keep up with your duties and Have a happy Hammy!

Does the black teddy bear hamster make a good pet?

Teddy Bear Hamsters make wonderful pets, I had a teddy bear hamster and they are the sweetest animals in the world! But each hamster is different and they require being handled daily, clean their cage once a week, change their water and food daily. Keep in mind hamsters are very fragile, even Teddy Bear Hamsters. If this is your first hamster please research it further before getting one and if you choose to get one you must accept the responsibility and take care of it properly.
