What is the best way to vacuum above ground pool?

put a pool vacuum on the end of a hose plug it into the vacuum plate over the leaf basket and start the filter then just vacuum the pool floor as you would any floor that is being vacuumed.

You can obtain "robot" vacuum-cleaners that can be allowed to run all night. They "stick" themselves to the floor by the suction, that breaks the flow and they release, give a random little hop and clean the next patch of floor. rather intriguing to watch until you're used to them! Make sure the hose is long enough for the pool.

We have a 42 x 15 round Intex. What works for us is last one out creates a whirlpool and gets out, approx 5-10 min later all dirt and debris are in a clump in the middle and is easily removed by the skimmer.

If it's like the one we have, you just hook up a garden hose to the vacuum head. The rush of water through the head pulls some of the pool water along with it, which sucks up the dirt into the "exhaust". The little cloth baggie ties over the exhaust hole and catches the dirt. The problem is that anything finer than coarse sand is going to pass right through that cloth baggie and back into the pool. If you're lucky, it will stay suspended long enough to get caught by the pool filter. However, I ditched the cloth baggie and instead fit a length of hose over the exhaust so that all the dirt is carried outside the pool. It's a bit more cumbersome but I got tired of things being dirty just hours after I "cleaned".

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY or YOUR TIME - I had the same predicament and search for a solution for weeks. I eventually purchased various items that claimed to vacuum the dirt, sand, and small debris off the bottom of the pool (i.e. Aqua Broom, intex buggy vacuum) which was a total waste of money. None of the items did the job and was very time consuming and frustrating. I do not have a problem with the chemical make up of the water. It processes chlorine via a salt water chlornation system (Chlorease) which works perfectly as long as you keep the water hardness in check otherwise you have scale buildup on the plates. Sorry I digress, anyway just get the right size coupler for your outtake valve (the hole that sucks the water from the pool to the pump). A hose long enough to reach around the bottom of your pool. Connect one in to your outtake and the other you and connect to your telescopic pole with a tie down (not sure of the name the plastic thingy that secures wires). Turn on filter and vacuum. Hopefully you have a pump of 2000gph+ or it may take you some time. My filter pumps 4000gph and the pool in 16' round so it takes me maybe 10 minutes to completely clean the bottom of all dirt, sand, bugs, or debris. Reminder if you are vacuuming a lot of sediment I suggest you take time to clean or replace filter or you lower your pressure and return some of the filt back into the pool. GOOD LUCK!

Buy a hose that reaches at least to the middle of the pool and attaches to your intake valve. Create a whirlpool in the water, and allow a few minutes for all the dirt to reach the middle. Enter the pool and hold hose near center where dirt has collected. Have someone switch pump on to "waste". It should not take more than a few seconds to vacuum up the pile. Turn of pump and switch back to filter position. This is the fastest and most effective way to remove dirt so that it is not just filtered and released back into the pool water.
