Their is no "best" wood for necks. As long as it's hard and stable it should be fine. One may think maple is the best wood to use for necks while another may think mahogany is better. Sound and feel of the woods are slightly different and not better than one another.

Guitars are made of many woods, such as Mahogany, Rosewood, Spruce, Ebony, Maple, and so on. The price of a guitar is often affected by the wood it is made of. For example, a guitar made of inexpensive laminated wood would cost less than a guitar made of carefully selected, quality wood. There is no rule of thumb on this matter. Most guitar stores provide information on materials used in a guitar, including the type of wood used on the fretboard and the body of the guitar.

Many like mohany for the body of an acoustic, and solid spruce for the top. I prefer cedar for the top myself because it a bit warmer tone. Some like maple for the body because of the volume it produces. For an electric, maple is a common wood. I built an Electric Guitar using a walnut burle for the body and it sounded very nice.
