What story shows God's love and forgiveness?
The Bible = = I like to read the story of the "prodigal son" in the book of Luke, Ch. 15:11-32. Here we see the heart of God as exemplified in the father as he is brokenhearted over the loss of his son, and then of his son's return. Most important to me is that the father met his son as he was returning well away from the family's home. This means the father was looking every day, watching and hoping for his son to return. As soon as the father caught sight of his son he ran to him and embraced him. The son had a speech all prepared declaring his thoughtlessness in leaving and asking to be a simple servant in his father's household. The father wants to hear none of it. The father doesn't even let the son finish his speech. The father calls for a robe and ring for his returning son, and orders the preparation of a banquet in his son's honor. To me, this shows God's heart better than any other bible story, with one exception. Of course, that's the story of the crucifixion, death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. I believe God is constantly on the lookout for those ready to come to Him, whether they be believers who have wandered away or those turning to Him for the first time. God's anger towards sin has been taken away by His Son's sacrifice. God no longer looks at humanity through the lens of judgement. God's work is done, and He is now awaiting men and women to realize and believe the gospel message.
