"Bio" comes from the Greek word for "Life". A hazardous substance or activity is one which endangers life. The workers in chemical plants have to be very careful and strict in their work. You see warning plates on the backs of tankers and lorries which are carrying hazardous substances.

So you see that bio + hazardous" means life + danger" = dangerous for living things.
