What is the black book of secrets about?

This boy who is about to have his teeth pawned off by his parents. He runs before they take his teeth, and pushes his father into a lake that nobody got out of alive.

He travels faraway and meets a seemingly wealthy pawnbroker also known as Joe Zabbidou (all the pawnbrokers he's seen were poor) and the boy becomes the pawnbroker's assistant and they decide to travel together. They arrive at Pagus Parvus and settles there. Everyone in town owes debt to the only rich man Jeremiah Ratchet in the town.

In the day Ludlow Fitch and Joe Zabbidou has a good trade of pawning, but in the night people from town pawns their secrets and confesses to the pawnbroker while the boy writes it down on the book. He then takes over the business of becoming the next secret pawnbroker

This book is a bit haunting, mysterious, and is a bit dark, but it is wonderfully written. I recommend this book.
