The black stuff you may see can be defined as one of three things:

  1. It may be tartar, calcium deposits, or mineralized plaque. These may be caused by habits such as smoking and eating dark foods.
  2. It may be a stain caused by coffee and/or tea. A "Smoker's Toothpaste" may be used to combat this and make it disappear.
