The term Blacksmith generally refers to those who worked Iron (The "black" as wrought iron is dark in colour, almost black).

They typically made things like horse shoes, pots, etc.

Smith meant "worker" so a silversmith worked on silver, a goldsmith worked with gold etc.

all i know is that hierarchy is any system of persons or things ranked one above another. am pretty sure though that the blacksmiths where a high rank people, not rich nor peasants, but something as an average person or above, because it is a really important job back in the Renaissance time and today.
