The candy cane was earlier a simple hard sugar rod to keep the children busy and not to disturb the Church service during church services. The candy canes became associated with the Christmas festivity and acquired a crookshape of the shepherd's cane in symbolic manifestation of Jesus. Innovations in color and stripes to the candy cane became a part of Christmas festivity and a Christmas tradition.

The white was to remind them to live a sinless life, and the crook shape was to remind them of the shepherds that visited the baby Jesus.
