Officially, Thomas Jefferson named it The Capitol. He borrowed the word from the Latin name for the hill in Rome where the temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, Capitoline Hill. L'Enfant, the architect of much of D.C., originally suggested the name "Congress House," but was overruled by Jefferson, President Washington's chief advisor on the project.
