Calamba, Laguna, June 23, 1998 - The Centennial Freedom Trail's Calamba stop-over is now open. President Fidel Ramos himself led the nationwide observance of Dr. Jose Rizal's 137th birthday by inaugurating a shrine for the national hero at his birthplace.
Forming part of the Centennial Freedom Trail which blazes across the country, the Rizal shrine is a reconstruction of the family home where Rizal was born
Shown for the first time in public is a sculpture of Rizal as a young boy of 9, the age when he left Calamba to study in Binan.
In his remarks at the inaugural program at the Calamba town plaza, President Ramos said museums and statues are but small gestures when compared to Rizal's sacrifices on behalf of his people.
The President urged the citizenry to take an active part in the protection of the Filipinos' heritage through the preservation of the country's shrines.
