The 2007 model has a timing chain instead of a timing belt.
We find timming mark on the oil pump or on the block ,crankshaft sprocket and on the camshaft sprocket.

The easiest thing to do is see what MOM says, or the Motorcycle Operators Manual that comes with the GS500. It has all the information you need, but here is the gist. You need to find the half-way point between your front and rear sprocket on the chain, and mark the height of the chain. At this half-way point, your are basically looking to be able to push the chain up about 1 to 1.5 inches. If less then it's too tight, if more then it's too loose. So determine the difference of the chain height at rest compared to when you are pushing it up.

I'm sure it is possible with a bunch of work, but why would you want to? A chain drive is heavier, requires more maintenance, will not last as long and is safer. Chain drive requires rear wheel adjustment every 300 to 3000 miles (depending on the model), lubrication with special chain grease (do NOT use WD-40 or 3-in-1), and if a chain comes off the sprocket, you are facing a rear-wheel lockup which can cause a crash at speed. Belt drive requires no lube, no performance loss vs chain, and if you throw a belt it will become shredded which avoids a nasty rear-wheel lock.

The GM 2.2L (not ECOTEC) engine for that model year used a timing chain with a teflon tensioner. As far as I know, it had no belt. However, the tensioners are notorious for failure...they break off and get between the chain and the sprocket, which snaps the chain. When this happens, the valves contact the pistons, bending them. If the engine is starting to sound like a diesel, you should consider having the chain and tensioner replaced.

Good bikes are made in different frame sizes. And dedicated riders often chainge the gearing ratio by replacing either the sprocket or the driver with one with another tooth count than it came with. These things influence chain length, so you see that no one can tell how many links your chain should be. Chains are just about Always bought a Little long, then cut to length on the bike. Faster than counting links. Chain breakers aren't expensive. Either have a shop fit the chain when you buy it, or get a chain breaker (and a quicklink) and fit it yourself. Do note that chain, driver and sprocket wear together, but usually the chain wears the fastest. So sticking a new chain on old sprockets can often lead to the chain skipping and slipping. If you don't know how to measure a chain for wear, better replace aat least chain and driver at the same time.
