Any of various relatively small, short-necked, large-billed waterfowl (several genera in subfamily Anatinae, family Anatidae). The legs of true ducks (Anatinae) are placed rearward (as are those of swans), resulting in a waddling gait. Most true ducks differ from swans and true geese (see goose) in that male ducks molt twice annually, females lay large clutches of smooth-shelled eggs, and both sexes have overlapping scales on the skin of the leg and exhibit some differences between sexes in plumage and in call. All true ducks except shelducks and sea ducks (see diving duck) mature in the first year and pair only for the season. They are generally divided into three groups: perching ducks, dabbling ducks, and diving ducks. The whistling duck species, also called tree ducks, are not true ducks but are more closely related to geese and swans.

Ducks are a type of bird. They are warmblooded. Ducks have wings, beaks and webbed feet.

Their feet help them supposedly "glide" through water, wings are obviously used to fly with and their beaks are used for eating, drinking and digging.

Ducks are covered in feathers to keep them warm, as they are warmblooded creatures. They lay eggs in nests on hard ground, but in hidden areas. They Sid on their nests, (eggs) and when their babies are born, they sit on them whilst they sleep. Female ducks are very protective of their nests and ducklings, so they're not afraid to attack. I've seen a mother duck chasing a cat down the road before, saving her ducklings.

Ducklings stay with their mother for about 3 - 4 months, when they can defend themselves. They can't fly until their wings have properly developed.

Mating season is usually in February-July, but mating can take place at any time really. Males are second best in duck world. The females choose where to go usually, and usually have one or more male to accompany them and protect them, although when ducklings are born, only the mother's "mate" (boyfriend, husband) can stay near her.

Ducks have many patterns on their feathers and there are many species of duck, like the mallard for example. Female mallards come as any shade of brown, normally, with a grey beak and orangish webbed feet. Male mallards usually have a green head and neck, brown chest, (with a small white ring separating the brown and green on the neck) a grey back and wings, white under-belly and a white tip of the tail.

So males mallards are extremely colourful and more so than female mallards. Female ducks honk, whilst males quack. Ducklings chirp and like humans, male duck voices break.

Females can have loads of ducklings. The most I've heard of is 16, and they have so many as not many survive. Some babies don't even make it out of the egg.

Ducks groom themselves a lot. They use their beak and feet to scratch, beak and rub themselves.

They communicate by honking, quacking and generally "talking" but also out of body language. They can bob their heads, point with their heads and usually use their head for most of their body language, actually.

They are very amusing creatures. I love ducks dearly. So far, ducks I know have made me laugh by:

> Playing racing games

> Hiding in bushes from me when they know they shouldn't be in the plants (don't worry, I let them stay there)

> Not allowing me to pass them without giving food

> Trusting me

> Landing from flight with a head-stand

> Doing a dance to music (honestly! Both of them were doing the same thing in time!)

> Just generally doing funny dances, such as walking backwards

> Bringing ducklings to see me and letting me hold them

> Hiding behind me when they got scared

> One of the ducklings pretending to fly when I held it high

> Venturing into my house when I left the back door open. They (some adult ducks and teenage ducklings) came into the living room quacking/honking. They've been in my house a lot of times

Which reminds me! When ducks get scared, they poop. They poop runny poops. Just so you know. One duckling has even gone upstairs pooping and back again. So don't scare them!

I hope I've helped you with any duck information you may have needed! I'd like to just say thank you to all of the ducks I know, for always giving me a pleasurable time. If you give it time, any animal will trust you. You can never rush trust.

Thank you!
