Capsaicin is the chemical that makes chili peppers hot.
Capsaicin is also extremely potent, as the hottest pepper in the world the Naga Jolokia (a.k.a. Ghost pepper) is around 855,000-1,050,000 Scovilles (The scale for measuring how hot a particular pepper, or spicy food is), while pure capsaicin rates around 15,000,000-16,000,000.
