and Citric acid is H3C6H5O7. The purpose of the Aspirin is to treat the pain that necessitates use of the alka-seltzer. the citrate ion hydrolyzes to produce a weak base that make for the antacid properties of alka-seltzer. The reaction that takes place with use of aspirin is:
H3C6H5O7 + 3CO3 --> 3 Na+ + C6H5O73- + 3H2O + 3CO2
