The taiga is the terrestrial biome with the lowest annual average temperatures after the

tundra and permanent ice caps. Extreme winter minimums in the northern taiga are typically

lower than those of the tundra. The lowest reliably recorded temperatures in the Northern

Hemisphere were recorded in the taiga of northeastern Russia. The taiga or boreal forest

has a subarctic climate with very large temperature range between seasons, but the long

and cold winter is the dominant feature.

Taiga is another name for boreal forest ("boreal" means northern). Typically it has huge tracts with just one kind of tree, nearly always an evergreen. For some reason, possibly because it's an unfamiliar word, many people confuse taiga with tundra. (I even saw a nationally-televised program in which the speaker said, "here on the tundra..." against a complete background of trees.)

Fortunately, it's easy to avoid this mistake once you know it: the tundra has NO TREES; it's too cold and dry for them. There is some vegetation, though, which distinguishes tundra from cold desert. One common plant is reindeer moss.
