The Misfits, by James Howe, is a teen a novel about a group of twelve year olds at a middle school in a small town in America. These three boys and one girl are going through the normal pangs of the transition between childhood and adolescence, but The Misfits paints their experience in a refreshingly different light. The four are the usual outcasts found in most schools, and one of their number has decided to take a stand against what she sees as the hypocrisy in her school. Through her determination to put forward her beliefs, she forces her friends to step back and take a look at themselves and each other.

The book is written from the point of view of one of the kids, Bobby, and since the group are all only twelve, The Misfitsmanages to look at some of the issues facing early teens, without the usual hormone-charged romping. Some of the issues it touches on with surprising grace are deaths of loved ones, homosexuality and people being more than they seem. It is pleasant to read in that it does not give out the impression of trying to deal with these things; rather it pulls them all together in a light-hearted story, encompassing events and emotions that many people go through.

One criticism of the novel is that, while the characters usually speak in slang, abbreviations such as 'don't' have been extended to their full length and this grates with the sloppy language used by the kids. One event near the end also comes across as rather inappropriate for the age group of both characters and readers, but otherwise it is quite suitable for its target audience, and should appeal to those aged 10-14.

Altogether, though The Misfits may not provide the answers to teenage problems and angst, it is a pleasant read and good for some frivolous laughs.
