Toronto is the fifth largest city in North America; only Mexico City, New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago have larger populations.

Situated adjacent to Toronto are several other large municipalities, some of which also have populations in excess of a million.

Another major Canadian city, Hamilton, is only 75 kilometers away to the west. The land between Hamilton and Toronto is entirely urban. The population of the Hamilton area itself is approaching a million.

Other large cities abound in the area surrounding Toronto. Many have populations of their own measuring in the several hundred thousand range.

It is impractical to discuss Toronto, the central part of a multi-million person megalopolis, by using terms such as "closest town."
