There is no one "military code of honor."
Honor means many things to many people. Thomas Jefferson is credited with writing, "Loyalty above all else but honor." He seems to have failed to formally define what honor is though.
Honor involves ethics, morals, a sense of duty, justice, and equity. Those who embody honor live by their own sense of integrity.
Jack Nicholson as Marine Colonel Nathan R. Jessup spoke of honor in A Few Good Men in one of the most memorable monologues in movie history:
"Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to."
Aside from the obvious psychopathic defense of homicide, there is truth there.
Each of the three United States Military Academies follows the same honor code, and cadets are required to take an oath to uphold it:
I will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.
Even this is a bit vague in its broad specificity.
Everyone who enters the US Military swears the same oath:
I, (NAME), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.
This provides a slightly clearer guide, but still one that is open to interpretation, and interpretations that are debated almost daily. Perhaps though it is a foundation for a potential military code of honor.
