The fancy Collector's Edition packaging highlights the key extra, which is a 2GB USB drive shaped as a green plumbob, the distinctive jewel that hovers over whichever sim that you're controlling. It comes with a matching green carabiner so that you can carry it around easier. While 2GB is a decent amount of storage, you can easily purchase higher capacity USB drives for less than $20. The other physical extra in the box is relatively quaint; it's a hints and tips guide that beginners may find useful. Then there's a virtual extra of a European-style sports car in the Collector's Edition so that your sims can commute in style. It's neat, but not necessary, especially considering that EA has set up an online store where all sorts of new content will be made available. Already, every owner of The Sims 3 can download a free car from the store (a third-generation Toyota Prius, showing off some of the potential marketing possibilities in this chapter of the series). Basically, the Collector's Edition is aimed directly at the many diehard fans of The Sims who want to show off their love by having a Sims-style USB drive.
