There isn't really a common name, since vertebrates are all animals with a backbone/internal skeleton, as opposed to bugs, octopuses, and other animals that don't have that kind of skeletal system. A vertebrate has vertebrae (vertebrae is the plural of vertebra). A vertebra is one of many bones in the spine.
