The vertebra go down the back, from the cranium (skull) to the tailbone. Vertebra make little cage-like boxes stacked on top of each other with a hole through the 'box' from top to bottom. The vertebra protects the spinal cord. In between each 'box' that vertebra make is a disk of spongey material to absorb the jarring of normal daily activities. Because the vertebra have the disk material and is not one long bone, we can bend forward, backward, to both sides. You may have heard about disk herniation. That's when the disk material has completely leaked out of the space, leaving one vertebra sitting right on top of the next without any cushion. That can irritate the spinal cord, cause muscle spasms, and cause unbearable pain. It also makes it harder to move, twist, bend, etc.
The T3 vertebra is the third thoracic (chest) vertebra when counting from the skull towards the tail. The dorsal process (the bony point that comes upward towards the skin) will be around the top edge of the scapula (shoulder bone).
