If you have a history of mental illness you may not be allowed to join the military for fear of going rogue. You could have a terrible case of PTSD if you do join, and may not receive proper care.
In order to answer this question in any depth, we would first need an accurate definition of "normal." Generally speaking, however, we could define mental illness as a condition and world view that does not match that of society as a whole. I feel very sorry for them and hope that they can overcome their issues. Most hospitalizations for mental illness are severe depression. Do not pity them, they don't need it. They need understanding, not judgement. You shouldn't feel any kind of way. They're people too.
