rings of gold are not compounds, rather solid mixtures called alloys. jewelry gold is measured in Karats, 24 K being the most pure. most jewelry gold has either some (5-10%) silver, copper, or other hard metal. together the alloy has much stronger strength than the quite soft metal gold does alone. but the alloy retains the remarkable properties of luster/shine and resistance to oxidation (rusting or getting coated with a layer of a type of gold oxide, which would diminish the shine). steel is another alloy, as is bronze and brass.
