Maximum power transfer is used when designing a system with limited energy availability. When designing a short operating time motor that runs from a battery, maximum power transfer saves battery and motor costs. High currents are usually desired in this scenario, so, the battery's internal resistance becomes a significant part of the power delivery resistance. The maximum speed that the system can achieve will be at the maximum power transfer point. The motor can be thought of as a variable resistor (ie back EMF effect). When the motor's effective resistance equals the battery and wiring resistance then that is the maximum power operating point. However, if the motor's load is not correctly geared, maximum power cannot be achieved because the motor effective resistance will not match the battery and wiring resistance.

A dc source network can be represented as a voltage generator in series with an equivalent source resistance. The condition for maximum power transfer is that the load resistor is equal to the source resistance.

For an ac source of fixed frequency the same condition applies unless the source impedance has reactance as well as resistance. In that case the load has to be the complex conjugate of the source impedance, so if the source impedance is R+jX, the load has to be R-jX.

The maximum power condition is used in signal amplifier circuits or for sending power to or from a radio antenna. It does not apply to power supply circuits at 50 or 60 Hz because in that case the source impedance has to be as low as possible. The voltage remains nominally constant and each item of equipment draws as much current and power as needed for its operation.
