What is the condition of chitwan national park?

Chitwan has evolved from a hunting reserve used by the Rana Prime Ministers and Royal Family, through a rhino reserve in the sixties to a full national park from 1973. Currently covering almost 1000 sq km it is perhaps Nepal's finest lowland national park with a major assemblage of south Asian megafuana (only missing the Wild Buffalo or Arna).

The park is managed by the Department of National Parks of the Government of Nepal with the support of the Nepal Army which provides a protection force. A third element in a relationship of both check-and-balance and also mutual support, is that of the wildlfie lodgeslocated inside the park and provide significant revenue for the park, conservation support, guest education and awareness of conservation issues to visitors, local employment an community support.

In recent years an effective Buffer Zone has been established around the park in which community resource needs and conservation imperatives and managed by a Buffer Zone Council with full community participation.

Pressures still remain on the park - particularly poaching of rhino and tiger to satisfy the illegal makret for wild animal parts - largely for traditional Chinese medicine. The park department, army and community make eveyr effort to mitigate poaching but the recent political unrest in Nepal, now stettling down, did facilitate a rise in poaching.

A combination of the local community, park management and responsbile conservation toruism, when thoguhtfully and sensitvely managed can provide maximum protection to the global asset and treasure that is under Nepal's trusteeship.
