In The Lord of the Rings the conflict is that Sauron wants to rule middle earth and no single army is strong enough to go up against him, the time of the elves is at its end and the elves are leaving. Sauron wants the one ring back that was taken from him when he was defeated the first time.
In The Hobbit the conflict is that the Dwarves want the gold and their mountain back, which Smaug has taken from the Dwarves. So they set off on a quest to steal the gold back. So they hire Bilbo as a theif.
