New moon is about Edward Leaving Bella and Jacob helping her with her depression. In one point of the book Alice sees Bella jumping off a cliff (for fun but she doesn't know that) and tells edward. Edward then phones Bellas phone and Jacob picks up saying Charlies at the funeral (His friends Harry clearwater) but of course edward doesn't know this. Alice and Bella are then relied on to go and save him from making the volturi (like the vampires royal family) provoked to destroying him.

Yes, "new moon" is a compound noun. It consists of two words, "new" and "moon," that come together to form a single concept referring to the phase of the moon when it is not visible from Earth. In this context, both words contribute to the meaning of the term as a whole.
The moon phase that follows the new moon is the waxing crescent phase. During this phase, a small sliver of the moon is illuminated on the right side, signaling the beginning of the moon's waxing or growing phase as it moves towards a full moon.
The word "moon" translates as "mond". The only time that the word "moon" is used is in the context of "mooning", (to bare ones backside).
In early societies, the reappearance of the moon was often a cause for celebration -- after all, it meant that the dark had passed, and the full moon was on its way back. The Carmina Gadelica offers some beautiful prayers for the night of the New Moon. They're Christian in the original context, but can be adapted nicely for a Pagan ceremony.
