During erection the glans and the corona become enlarged. Often the corona will flare out, creating a more prominent ridge when erection occurs. If the male is not circumcised, the foreskin usually retracts during erection, and the corona helps to keep the foreskin in the retracted position, allowing the very sensitive glans to be fully exposed.
