Its full title was the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, often shortened to the Soviet Union. Westerners tended to call it "Soviet Russia", not realising the sensitivities involved.
there is a union called CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) which consists of most of ex-Soviet countries. But since 2009 because of the war between Russia and Georgia, Georgia is not a member of the union.
