It can vary a great deal. Both of my kids home school. My younger daughter uses the Spectrum books. She has 7 books, and they were about $10 each. Spectrum has the curriculum and the worksheets together in each book. There were some extras needed like spiral notebooks, binders, printer ink, and pencils. My older daughter home schools, but she attends virtual school. In our state, virtual school is free. There is the cost of buying a laptop or desktop, and of maintaining an internet connection. Some people do not even do this. They do their kids schoolwork with them each day at a library, or other public place with free internet. I use web sites like Alibris and Half.com to buy as many of my kids books as I can. You can often pick up the books for a small fraction of the retail price, and the shipping is low.

There are some other places that you save money when homeschooling. For instance, there is no longer the price of gas driving back and forth to the school. Peanut butter and jelly or leftovers are cheaper than school lunch. The kids can wear sweatpants and a t-shirt while sitting at the table doing their work. You can save their more presentable clothes for going out to dinner.

There are also ways to "spend to save." We knew we would be doing some field trips, and needing to take the kids out. We bought annual passes to a couple of places. For the entire family, an annual pass to the zoo was about $100. An annual pass to the Museum of Science and Industry for the family was also right at $100. The great thing about these passes are that they always have partner offers. If you ask, they always have lists of other educational places you can get into for free with their passes. If you go school shopping the same time as the regular school year, you can get some great deals too. Places like Staples, Office Depot, and Wal-Mart always have back to school sales where you can stock up on things like boxes of crayons for 20 cents. If you play your cards right, you can give your child a great education for under a few hundred dollars a year.

Do you need your parents permission to become homeschooled?

Yes. It depends what kind of homeschooling you are doing and your age. If you are doing the book homeschooling, then it is more helpful to have a parent around to help you, but if you are 15 or older, it is not necessary, it is up to your parents. Online homeschooling is completely different, you can do it on your own because you can listen to the lessons.
