It was more of a legal affair than a romantic affair. Marriages were arranged. The engagement had to have the consent of the pater familias of both the boy and girl. A formal

contract was signed, and if either party backed out of the agreement, there could be legal consequences. Sometimes the man gave his intended an iron ring, but it was not mandatory and an engaged couple would sometimes appear in public holding hands as a sign of their engagement. This is not to imply that there was no affection between the couple, or that all Roman marriages were strictly political in intent. There are numerous instances of long lasting affectionate marriages.
