That would be the P-trap. The dip in the P always keeps a plug of liquid preventing gas from coming into the living space.

A P trap is one of many types of "traps" there are grease traps, drum traps , bell traps , running traps , 1/2 S traps some are legal to use and some are not depending on location and useage

A trap alone cannot be considered prtotection unless it is properly vented OTHER then storm traps

It is also called a UBEND
